Table. 1.

Range of hemolysis score calculation for identifying mechanical hemolysis

Score*MCHC (g/dL)MPV (fL)RBC ghost (106cells/µL)mHb-cHb (g/dL)MCHC-CHCM (g/dL)
0<34<7.3<0.02<0.13<0.26
134≤ <36.37.3≤ <7.80.02≤ <0.030.13≤ <0.390.26≤ <0.96
236.3≤ <38.57.8≤ <8.50.03≤ <0.040.38≤ <1.310.96≤ <3.35
3≥38.5≥8.5≥0.04≥1.31≥3.35

Abbreviations: MCHC, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration; MPV, mean platelet volume; RBC, red blood cell; mHb, measured hemoglobin; cHb, calculated hemoglobin; CHCM, corpuscular hemoglobin concentration mean.

Example of hemolysis score calculation: If MCHC 35 g/dL, MPV 7.9 fL, RBC ghost 0.03×106 cells/μL, mHb-cHb 0.5 g/dL, and MCHC-CHCM 1 g/dL, new algorithm is MPV(2)+RBC ghost(2)+mHb-cHb(2)+MCHC-CHCM(2)=8 and old algorithm is MCHC(1)+RBC ghost(2)+mHb-cHb(2)+MCHC-CHCM(2)=7.
